• The Fall of the Wall - Capturing Opportunity
  by Tom Collamore Watching the news coverage of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall has caused me to reminisce a bit. I had the privilege of working for President George H.W. Bush in a variety of positions over many years and got to see him deal with many challenging issues from a front row seat. What many don't remember about that night 20 years ago is that we in the West had no idea how the Soviet Union would react to the fall of the Wall. The Cold War seems like ancient history today, but in 1989 it was still very much a reality. President Bush showed great restraint and diplomacy in praising the expansion of freedom but resisting the urge to "dance on the Wall." The result was enhanced trust and leverage with Gorbachev, and the eventual peaceful transformation of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Our world changed for the better as a result of the steady and thoughtful actions of President George H.W. Bush.
